Some Walmarts sell guns in their sporting goods departments. They sell shotguns and some hunting rifles, plus ammunition for the guns they offer. They stopped selling handguns, “modern sporting rifles” like the AR-15, and ammunition for those guns years ago.

In 1970, Scoot and Janet's son, Tom, began working at the business. At only 8 years old he began his lifelong career as an entreprenuer in the sporting goods industry. By 1988 Scoot decided to retire. Tom and his wife Brenda purchased the Gun Shop that year and continue to manage it today along with their two children.

Guns can only be held in layaway for 60 days. Paperwork should be completed after final payment of the gun has been made. In the event the customer is not approved to purchase the gun, Rural King will assess a service charge of $10.00 for the handling, storage and record keeping costs of the layaway agreement.

With a striker-fired handgun, there is no hammer present. When the slide is racked back and released forward, the firing pin remains back and under spring tension. The trigger releases this tension and allows the pin to push forward resulting in firing the round in the chamber.
